Starting A Business During A Pandemic

starting a business during a pandemic

Welcome back to another blog post! Wow, we’ve made it through 2020, what a year. This year was a rough one for me as for so many other people, but we’re here stronger than ever. I’ve been away from this blog, but only because I had been working on an exciting project of mine. I launched my very own business! Let me tell you that starting a business during a pandemic had some challenges, but I wouldn’t change it.

Why I started a business during a pandemic?

For a long time, I had been wanting to start my own business for 3 years now to be exact. I got the entrepreneur bug back in 2017 when I felt lost regarding my career path. For the last three years I’ve been going back and forth between ideas of what I wanted my business to be about and I just couldn’t nail it down. I had too many ideas and nothing felt right. However, during this time I was doing research, brainstorming, and gathering my ideas.

2020 has been a rough year in so many ways and like many people I lost my job in the middle of the year. I’ve always believed that everything happens for a reason so when I lost my job and realizing everything happening in the world, I just felt like starting a business during a pandemic was the right move to make. So, I went for it I had the ideas, tools, and now all the time in the world to focus on this one dream I had kept pushing for years. I knew that no matter how rough 2020 got I wanted to end the year accomplishing something I’ll be proud of.

This pandemic has taught me that things can change in seconds, you can’t rely on anyone but yourself, and that I should trust and believe in myself.

What’s my business about?

As I brainstormed on business ideas, I couldn’t decide what I wanted to focus on. I first started thinking about a clothing boutique, then a photography business, then sunglasses, and well nothing felt right. One thing I did know was that I wanted to embrace my culture and be able to represent my roots while empowering. I’ve always been a visual and creative person and I wanted that to be showcased in my brand as well. After many ideas, thoughts, and brainstorming I decided to create an apparel brand, IXTA Apparel where I would sell custom t-shirts, hats, and mugs.

Every piece in my business is meaningful. I’m obsessed with graphic t-shirts, I’m a coffee lover and obsessed with cute mugs, and to cover up messy hair days I always through in a hat. That’s how I decided on my three product categories. IXTA Apparel launched on Thanksgiving Day, November 26th, 2020 and recently we launched our first-ever winter collection. Starting a business during a pandemic has brought some struggles, but overall I’m so proud of myself for going for it, seeing this dream come to a reality, and I can’t wait to see how we evolve in this coming year.

Struggles of starting a business during a pandemic

Deciding to start a business is one thing, but doing it is another. Overall, it’s never easy starting a business and none the less while in a pandemic. One of the struggles I faced while starting a business during a pandemic is that as I researched for vendors it was hard finding open places. While I went looking from one place to another for merchandise many vendors were close or back-ordered due to COVID.

I couldn’t exactly find what I was looking for and vendors said they didn’t know when they could expect new items and shipments were taking way longer than usual due to the pandemic. I had two options, either get discouraged and wait until I can get exactly what I wanted or just use what I had at the time. Of course, I decided to just go with what I had because I knew if I didn’t do it now, then when? I wasn’t going to sit around and wait until COVID went away.

Just go for it, things will fall in place

Nothing will ever be perfect so if you’ve been wanting to start a business, a blog, go back to school, find a new job, start a new career and you’re just waiting for things to be perfect — you’re wasting time! If 2020 has taught us something is that time is now because tomorrow is never guaranteed. I’m not a business expert and no one in my family owns a business, but this is something I’ve dreamt about so even though I’m not a pro and I don’t have all the answers I just went for it. I’m learning and I will continue learning and I might make mistakes along the way but that’s okay with me because it’s all part of the journey.
